Here's a band that likes to describe their style as "roots and roll". Now what does that mean, exactly? Well, I found out…as soon as I popped in The Piners, self-titled CD and clicked PLAY…at least, I thought I'd found out…but, then… what I was hearing was more like blue-grass…or...was it? …No, on second thought, maybe we're talkin "mountain" music…well, one thing IS for sure…this band, which is most often described as "Americana", is one of the most refreshing, I've listened to in a very long time. There isn't a song on this 13 cut CD that I don't like. Each one is well done…vocally, lyrically, and instrumentally… And speaking of instruments, this talented bunch really knows how to pick and play…You'll hear acoustics throughout. No loud amplifiers here…And what a treat to hear fiddles, mandolins, and great guitar…along with one very enthusiastic drummer! This group of singer/musicians really has put together a great band! The style may be hard to pin a name on, but the talent is very easy to spot. And the Piners willingly share their joy for music, with us. They don't hold anything back…Boo, the only female in the band, croons those slow, smooth bluesy sounds, that make you think of a lazy day along the side of a river…the vocal harmonies are perfect on every song... And who can't help but think of good ol' hillbilly music, when "Smoke Along the Track" starts to play? Most of the tunes on the album were written by the band, and its easy to see why they've had so much success in just the few short years they've been working together. It's hard to say anything bad about The Piners…and why should I? …This band gives me hope, that country music is still alive and kickin' …I know they don't like to be categorized into any one music style…but if this isn't country, I don't know what is! Ok, so maybe it's bluegrass…or…is it… honky-tonk? Hey, don't worry about it, just check out their music…I'm sure YOU'LL be able to put them in a category…or…will you?
