"OUT OF THE SHADOWS"

ARTIST:
HARLEY CUMMINS
ALBUM:
OUT OF THE SHADOWS
RECORD LABEL:
UNIVERSAL-SOUND RECORDS
Harley Cummins is a PERFECT example of someone who's an extremely talented artist, and yet, hasn't been "discovered" by the majors. Or maybe he has, and the timing wasn't right. Or maybe they just chose not to take the time to listen to his work. Whatever the reason, Harley is someone who I think, should have

been a "star", a long time ago! Of course, being a "star" carries some dangerous side effects, so maybe his life HAS taken the right path, after all.

He recently signed with Universal Sound Records, and has released his newest album, "OUT OF THE SHADOWS". And thank goodness he's decided to do that! …. To come out of the shadows, I mean. 'Cause it took exactly only one line of one song, for me to say, "hey, who the heck is THIS, and why haven't we heard more of him before now?". He's got the look, he's got the sound, and he's got the moves. Well, I assume he has the moves…since he certainly has everything else. I haven't seen him yet, so I won't PROMISE that. But, if anyone reading this, has seen him perform, let me know. Am I right, or wrong?

Harley comes out of the construction business to meet the music world, head on, after a long career hammering wood and meeting other obligation, but just messin' around with his music whenever he had the time. Boy oh boy! I mean, there's certainly nothin' wrong with hammerin' wood, and indeed, very admirable to meet the obligations you've committed to. But we are SO very lucky he's decided to spend more time with his music now. I've been told he's a wonderful carpenter, and I have no doubt that whatever he does, he does well. His music proves it. But now, Universal has given him the motivation he needs, I guess, to go back to the music, and share his fabulous gift with all of us!

Back in the 80's, Harley had a number one hit in Ireland, and spent some time touring there. He's performed with the best of them, like The Statler Brothers, Conway Twitty, and Marty Robbins, among others. And his sound has a little bit of all of them. But it's unique, too. He has a beautiful way of making a person glad he can sing a ballad. And he's a master of those great 'two-step', get-up-and-dance, kinda songs. He brings two of Marty's songs to this CD, and no one other than Marty Robbins, himself, could do it better.

I was particularly taken with the song "Are You Goin' That Far" (Rebecca Inez Haynes/Buck Moore). This one is partly sung, partly spoken. Not everyone has the talent to do this kinda song. Some sound stiff, and practiced. But Harley makes it sound easy, like he's tellin' a story he's really witnessed! I loved it!

Folks, if I were you, I'd go right on to http://www.universal-sound.com , and see if you can purchase this one. "Out Of The Shadows" is a definite keeper! And when you hear him singing "My Woman, My Woman, My Wife" (Marty Robbins). Oh my gosh…it will bring you to your knees. He has the ability to make you think of Marty and Elvis, at the same time! But make NO mistake…it's neither one…It's Harley Cummins, and it's a voice I hope we'll get to hear more of, from now on. Put down that hammer, Harley…and pick up the mic. We need talent like this in our lives! But then, hey….that's only …
